Thel Jean Cottage \ Accommodation in Underberg

Thel Jean is a quaint stone faced cottage nestled in the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg. Completely surrounded in the front by mountains and crystal clear rivers, it boasts an unhindered view of Garden Castle and The Rhino. The view from the garden is impressive to say the least. This setting is ideal for a romantic getaway and equally suitable for a family weekend or holiday, dogs are also welcome.

Just a 20 minute drive from Underburg and 1hr 45’ from Pietermaritzburg, it is easily accessible by way of an extraordinarily scenic drive. Underberg is a very well equipped, quaint town full of restaurants, art galleries, tourism businesses as well as all the shops you might require. A short drive from here is legendary Sani Pass, the historic route into Lesotho, at the top of which lies the highest pub in Africa, Sani Top.

Self Catering Accommodation

Thel Jean has three large bedrooms (two en-suite). A six sleeper bunk room, a total of three bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, dining room, lounge and bar. It also has a fridge, freezer and gas stove. In total the house comfortably accommodates 12 people.

The main bedroom upstairs boasts incredible views of Garden Castle (visible from the luxury of the bed) as well as a balcony overlooking the garden and mountain-scape.

Winters are great, spent around the fire and bar area. If you are lucky you could be greeted by magnificent views of snow covered mountains. Thel Jean is extremely popular during the winter months of July and August with bookings coming from people eager to experience the snow. If this is your thing, be sure to book early.

Summers can be spent frolicking in one of the many nearby mountain pools, walks in the surrounding foothills or for the more daring hikes into the Drakensberg, horse riding, golf, trout fishing, tubing, mountain biking etc. Summer is a very popular time in general, especially around December, so if you are interested in this time of year, we recommend booking at least 5 months in advance.

Activities and attractions

Thel Jean is 3kms from the Drakensberg Hotel and Golf Resort. This is great for sporting enthusiasts and includes a host of pubs and restaurants.

The cottage is within numerous day hikes in nearby Parks Board and Forestry areas. These include Three Pools which are perfect for a packed lunch and swimming. Bushman's Paintings and Queen's Pool and Devil's Pool are near by. Other attractions include Sleeping Beauty and Pillar Cave and for the really adventurous, the Rhino Horn, one of the highest peaks in the Southern Drakensberg.
