| St Lucia Wetlands: Recently
renamed iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the St Lucia Estuary and Wetlands Park is a World
Heritage Site, one of seven Unesco World Heritage sites in South Africa, that stretches
from Kozi Bay
in the north to Cape St Lucia in the south and is home to the worlds highest
forested sand dunes. |
|
|
|
It incorporates the whole of Lake St Lucia,
the St Lucia
and Maputaland Marine Reserves, the Coastal Forest Reserve and the Kosi Bay Natural
Reserve. And as if that were not enough, the 40 000 hectare Mkuzi Game Reserve is in the
process of being included into the park.
One of the most beautiful places on earth, the park is incredibly diverse with a
combination of subtropical coastline, classic African game park, the Ubombo Mountains,
forests, mangroves, dunes beaches and coral reefs that make it totally unique.
This amount of diversity results in an equally varied assortment of animal life
from the crocodile and hippo, through the elephant, giraffe and buffalo to the Giant
Leatherback turtle, whales and sharks. The wetland and other areas of the Lake St Lucia
area alone support more than 530 species of bird, including flamingos, and this area has
the highest diversity of amphibians in the country.
The sheer beauty of the place increasingly draws visitors from all over the world, and it
is an extremely popular fishing destination. Aside from this there is boating, scuba
diving, hiking, horseriding, game viewing, whale and bird watching to fill your time and
you can dive from the coral reefs or walk miles on beautiful beaches. |
