| Midlands Meander: One of the
first of its kind in the country, the Midlands
Meander is an arts and crafts route that covers a distance of some 80 kilometres
between Hilton,
just north of Pietermaritzburg, and Hidcote, close to Mooi River. |

|
The route wends its way past the
establishments of a group of artists, potters, weavers, woodcrafters, leather and metal
workers, herb growers, cheese makers, beer brewers, tea gardens and pubs - providing a
series of stops that allow you to enter the lives of this particularly vibrant and
voluntary network of like-minded people. Add to this a huge selection of accommodation -
and a pretty unique route has evolved over time.
Most of these individuals, certainly initially when the meander was in its beginning
stages, were refugees from city life, who selected the meander as a way to market their
wares. The group adopted as their logo the rare and ethereally beautiful Karkloof Blue, or
Orachrysops Ariadne, a rare butterfly whose only known breeding colony is a tiny area in
the forests in the Karkloof area, now a natural heritage site.
The beauty of this part of the world is what makes the Midlands Meander such a worthwhile
visit, aside from the unique mix of over 150 places to eat, drink, sleep, shop and soak up
the surrounding countryside. The changing seasons are marked here - the streams,
indigenous forests, country towns and grazing cattle -a gentle foreground for the
magnificence of the Drakensberg mountains that gently impose on wherever you might be.
A trip to this part of the world is downtime. Here you idle away the hours, browsing and
indulging your senses, attending the odd cookery or weaving workshop, or simply relaxing
at a country hotel, whilst the world continues without you. |
