| Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park: One
of the oldest game reserves in the country, the Hluhluwe Game Reserve was established as
early as 1895 and, combined with the adjoining Imfolozi park, protects some 96 000
hectares of savanna and bushveld. Famed for rescuing the white rhino from the brink of
extinction during its 1950s Operation Rhino, and its ongoing protection
of both the white and black rhino today, the reserve lies in the heart of Zululand
on the east coast of South Africa. |

Aside from the fact that the Hluhluwe
Imfolozi (also spelt Umfolozi) is the only reserve running formal conservation the
park holds at least one fifth of the worlds black and white rhino population - where
one can also view all Big Five animals. There are also self-guided foot trails, day walks,
game drives, picnic sites and boat tours the Hluhluwe dam offers a 40-seater boat,
although it is dependent on water levels, and the dam is often low.
The park offers four-day wilderness trails, literally through Africas oldest
established wilderness area, and with over 300 bird species, and an abundance of mammals
that include the blue wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, cheetah and hyena, visitors here can
experience the true meaning of what was once the hunting ground of Shaka, King of the
Zulus.
The word Hluhluwe comes from the isiZulu word that describes the thorny rope
climber, a plant prevalent in the park, with some very nasty thorns that are worth looking
out for, particularly if you have chosen one of the foot trails. See Hluhluwe
Accommodation for places to stay when visiting the reserve. |
