River Valley Nature Reserve Margate
Our family has been blessed with the stewardship of one of the few remaining privately owned pockets of natural habitat on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast, River Valley Nature Reserve.
It is our pleasure to be able to share this beautiful part of YHWH’s creation for others to enjoy, by being accommodated in our upmarket cottages, a small private campsite, walking trails through the reserve and a picnic area.
Self Catering Accommodation
Cottages:
River Valley Nature Reserve offers two identical cottages situated in a peaceful and picturesque part of the reserve close to the iVungu River. Each cottage has two large bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, both bathrooms having a shower and a bath. The lounge, dining room and kitchen are open plan. The lounge and bedrooms open up to a large verandah looking onto riverine forest. Fans are in the bedrooms and lounge area.
The kitchens are equipped with a fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, kettle, toaster, pots and pans and all the necessary crockery and cutlery. Linen, towels (bring own beach towels), soap and toilet paper are provided. Braai facilities are available as well as a trampoline and jungle gym for children. Each unit has a TV, DVD and DStv decoder (you need to bring your own card). No smoking is allowed in or around the
cottages.
Campsite:
The small campsite is situated in a shady section on the banks of the iVungu River. There are only five sites at the campsite each with its own plug point and braai. Ladies and Gents ablutions are available with toilets and hot water showers. There is also a place for washing up. A hall with a small kitchen is also available for groups to hire.
The reserve
The reserve falls within a horseshoe of a picturesque section of the iVungu River which meanders down through a valley of hills into the Indian Ocean at the well known Uvongo Beach, where one finds the iVungu Falls. It is a small reminder of the once untouched natural coastline with it’s varied ecosystems consisting of grassland, riverine and coastal forest.
Abundant bird life including the Narina Trogon, African Finfoot, Crowned eagle, Knysna Turaco, Olive Woodpecker and over 145 species of birds inhabit the reserve. Antelope such as Nyala, Impala, Bushbuck, and Blue and Grey Duiker can be seen on the reserve and if you are fortunate you might be able to get a sighting of the Cape Clawless Otter that frequent the reserve.
Activities and Attractions
We border the Margate Country Club for golfing enthusiasts and are 10 minutes from Margate and Uvongo beaches and 10 minutes from the Margate Airport.
Other activities in the area include whale watching, scuba diving and deep sea fishing.
