Penwarn Country Lodge is nestled in a beautiful valley in the Southern Drakensberg. Traversed by the Ngangwane river, this farm boasts a wide variety of game, including zebra, wildebeest, and antelope. For birding enthusiasts, our wetlands are home to 280 species of birds, including the elusive wattled crane.

The magnificent southern Drakensberg mountains rise up in the west and include famous peaks such as Hodgsons, Garden Castle, Rhino, and of course, the legendary Sani Pass. Rosy sunrises, and star-studded evening skies form the back drop to an intimate break from city life. The rustic charm of the lodges is set against the luxury of fine fare and good, old fashioned country hospitality. Only 25 minutes from the mountain village of Underberg, this is the ideal base for day trips up Sani Pass - remember your passports.

Accommodation

Choose between two fully-catered exclusive lodges, Mthini Lodge and Indabushe Lodge. Mthini Lodge overlooks a beautiful dam with stunning berg views, and is more private in its location. Indabushe Lodge is a beautifully refurbished 120 year old sandstone shed, with all the rustic charm of old world, complemented by the comfort of all the trimmings needed to provide comfort and cheer. Each room follows a theme: Zebra, Agapanthus, Duck, Trout, Lily, and Eland, a testimony to the abundance of animal life at the lodge, and the once resident Nimrod-the-otter also has a room in his honour!

We also offer self-catering accommodation in cottages comfortably equipped to make your stay with us an unforgettable experience.

Activities

Unless you simply want to put your feet up and soak in the peace and tranquillity of Penwarn and its amazing environment, activites to fill the day abound - fly-fish on a stretch of the farm’s Ngangwane river, in one of 4 trout dams, or 1 bass dam, or enjoy scenic horse rides or game drives. Relax at a picnic along the banks of a river pool, cool off in its refreshing waters, or go tubing, abseiling, mountain biking, or wing-shooting. Even archers find their mark at Penwarn.

Discover the secret beauty of San rock art, where we boast one of the biggest paintings of Eland in the Southern Hemisphere. Scout around for wild flowers, or visit the vulture restaurant, perchance catching a glimpse of the lammergeyer. The black eagle, osprey and marsh harrier are also resident at Penwarn. Go hiking and take in the scenery of our magnificent mountains that are a World Heritage Site.

Conferences

Conferences are held in our Conference Centre which accommodates 30 delegates. Should a larger venue be required, our dining room is adapted to accommodate 77 delegates and meals are served elsewhere in the lodge. The Lodge can accommodate 32 overnight guests, but in the cases of larger conferences, accommodation is arranged on neighbouring farms and hospitality establishments.

Weddings

Penwarn is a charming and romantic wedding venue. All services for the bridal party and guests can be organised through the lodge, and where more than 77 guests are invited, a marquee is provided to cater for the overflow from the dining room.
