Makhasa Game Reserve and Lodge Hluhluwe
Makhasa is a 2000ha community owned / KwaZulu Natal Wildlife stocked reserve situated in the heart of Maputuland. Makhasa lies adjacent to Phinda reserve within close proximity to Mkhuze and Hluhluwe / Umfolozi National Game Reserves. Easily accessibly by road, Makhasa Reserve is for the exclusive use of guests of Makhasa lodge.
Makhasa boasts an abundance of wildlife due to the unique diversity of habitats found within its boundaries. Five distinct habitats including sand forest, broad-leaved woodland, thorn veld, ilala veld and sand thicket allow the opportunity of countless sightings of an array of fauna and flora.
Amongst some of our better known inhabitants are three members of the prestigious Big 5, namely Rhino, Buffalo and Leopard. Makhasa also holds healthy populations of giraffe, zebra, hyaena, wildebeest, baboons and warthog amongst various species of birds and buck, including the rare and elusive Narina Trogan and Suni antelope.
With forgiving terrain, Makhasa is a bird walking paradise, with an abundance of species the lodge itself can keep an enthusiast occupied for days. On the reserve one finds many watering spots where sightings are often encountered. The reserves largest span of water allows for canoeing trips to the islands to experience Africa on water.
