Eagles' Rock Mountain Retreat \ Accommodation in Underberg

The King family welcomes you to Eagles’ Rock, our beautiful piece of God’s creation set in the magnificent Drakensberg mountains near Underberg and Himeville, in KwaZulu Natal. This pristine farming area is one of South Africa’s premier trout fishing destinations.

Our retreat is magnificently positioned on a mountain plateau overlooking the Umzimkulu River and lush farmlands. Being owner-run ensures you a very warm welcome, wonderful hospitality and an enjoyable holiday. Enjoy a romantic getaway or honeymoon in Kestrel or Falcon cottage or bring the whole family and friends to Lammergeier log cabin or Sparrowhawk cottage.

Accommodation

Eagles' Rock is a peaceful Self Catering and Bed & Breakfast Getaway. All cottages are fully equipped for self-catering with stove, fridge, crockery, cutlery and bedding. Each has a private braai (barbecue) area. A hearty country breakfast is served in the main dining room – the perfect way to start an eventful day in the Drakensberg.

Kestrel
Kestrel is a cosy Harvey thatched one bedroom cottage with double bed (plus electric blanket). The ensuite bathroom consists of bath, shower toilet and basin. The large living area has a custom built kitchen (well equipped with gas stove, fridge, microwave, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery) with breakfast nook at one end - easy chairs, a single bed and log fireplace at the other. The door opens onto a small wooden deck and braai area with magnificent views.

Falcon
Falcon is a cosy cottage consisting of a large open plan room with a double-bed (plus electric blanket) and sleeper couch for a child. It has an en-suite bathroom which consists of bath, shower, basin and toilet. There are two easy chairs facing a large window from which one can see “forever”. A log fire will keep you warm during the cold winter nights. The custom built kitchen is fully equipped with gas stove, fridge, microwave, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. A side door opens onto a covered patio and braai area, with magnificent views.

Lammergeier
This hand-crafted log cabin has a unique ambience and consists of an open-plan kitchen, dining-room and living area with log-fire. Two bedrooms downstairs with one full bathroom. Separate toilet. A large open-plan loft. This cabin sleeps up to 12 people. Double doors open onto a deck with panoramic views.

Sparrowhawk
A delightful log and block chalet with 3 bedrooms (main en-suite) sleeping 6. Second bathroom with shower. Large living area with a cosy fireplace open plan into kitchen. Covered patio and braai area with views to dam and farmlands.

Jackal Buzzard
Jackal Buzzard cottage has a small bedroom downstairs with a double bed. Steep steps (not for the infirm) lead to a large bedroom upstairs which also has a double bed. Downstairs there is a bathroom with bath, shower, toilet and basin. The living room has a double sleeper couch and a Jetmaster fireplace and is open plan into a small breakfast nook cum dining area and custom built kitchen. The door opens up onto a covered patio.

FISH EAGLE
Fish Eagle chalet has got three bedrooms. Bedroom One consists of a double bed (plus electric blanket) with an en – suite shower, toilet and basin. The sitting room leads into the kitchen which is well equipped, with a gas stove, fridge, microwave, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, this is the best room of the cottage as it lead off onto an enclosed balcony with lovely views down towards the Umzimkulu River and farmlands, ideal for early morning breakfasts. Bedroom Two (open plan) consist of double bed and two single beds with an en-suite bathroom, toilet and wash basin. An upstairs loft is accessible by means of a steep ladder from this room – ideally situated for kids with two single beds.

Activities

Enjoy the tranquillity of our private 25 acres with pure spring water and lovely views. Two short walks are available on the property and we encourage visitors to add to our check list of over 100 bird species. For the more energetic there is river tubing, canoeing, horse-riding, tennis, squash and golf available nearby. The more serious hiker can visit the Drakensberg conservation areas nearby where one can do trails of varying degrees of difficulty.

Fly fishing
Fly fishing in our trout dam or search for that elusive 10 pounder in other private or club waters in this premier trout fishing area. Access to river (in season) and dams can be arranged.

Sani Pass Trips
We arrange trips up Sani Pass. This is a must and often proves to be a highlight of our visitors’ stay. This entails a cross border trip into Lesotho; therefore passports are required.
