Umhlanga Coastline Destinations & Attractions

The Umhlanga Coastline region is all about introducing a sense of luxury into coastal living. Exquisite views of the Indian Ocean set off any Umhlanga Coastline experience, as the truly breath-taking vistas inspire some world-class relaxation and entertainment. This area is, not surprisingly, a popular holiday hotspot. Long stretches of unspoilt sandy beaches meet the gorgeous beachfront hotels within a sleepy village setting to create an escape that is simply unrivalled. And therein lies the secret to this area’s beauty – although it continues to be increasingly popular, it has never relinquished its unique, small-town charm.

The Umhlanga Coastline boasts a typical KwaZulu-Natal climate – hot and humid in the summer and warm in the winter. This means that, no matter what time of year you choose to visit, the weather is likely to cooperate with your travel plans.

The beaches are ideal for all sorts of activities. These range from swimming, sunbathing and surfing to snorkelling, scuba diving and sailing. The water is warm, thanks to the Agulhas current, making it irresistible. Your biggest problem may be leaving the beach at the end of each day.

The Hawaan Forest is the last of the dry coastal dune forests, thought to be some 18 000 years old. Walking through the forest, you may spot a huge variety of animals; some of which are shy and elusive. These include the crowned eagle, bushbuck, duiker (red and blue), the KwaZulu dwarf chameleon, coastal purple tip butterfly, crested guinea fowl and the spotted ground-thrush. Immerse yourself in the silent serenity of an ancient natural treasure.

La Lucia is a charming little town known for its quaint charm that incites complete and utter relaxation. While you may feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, it is actually very close to the metropolis of Durban. In addition, it is amply equipped with its own abundance of shops, restaurants and accommodation providers.

Those that love being part of nature are advised to spend some time in Umdloti Beach, which is a coastal conservancy and richly-populated wildlife habitat. The beaches are exquisite and promise fabulous mussel- and oyster-picking opportunities. This is also a prime location for whale watching during the period between July and December. All year round, schools of dolphins can be seen surfing the waves and leaping effortlessly out of the water. In addition, the coastal vegetation is not only beautiful, but fascinating too. This makes Umdloti an all-round destination for those that relish the outdoors.

Other popular tourist attractions on the Umhlanga Coastline include the Mount Edgecombe Country Club, Sharks Board, Umhlanga Art Gallery, and the fabulous Gateway Theatre of Shopping.
